Reflections from Joey Tabone World Environment Day has been celebrated every year since 1974. In 1974, I was only 7 living in the outer suburbs of Sydney, Australia. Back then the key environmental issue hitting the press was the Commonwealth Government enacting several key pieces of environmental legislation. By the time I entered university in 1988, a lot of core environmental protections were in place, but Australia came under immense public pressure to do something quickly about the depleting ozone layer and its consequential disastrous impact on future generations. By 1998, 10 later, I started work at the Australian Greenhouse Office - a stand-alone government agency within the environment portfolio. That experience sparked my determination to do something about environmental protection and campaigning for a greener and more prosperous future. It ultimately led to me coming to the UK to work for The Prince of Wales’s Charities as a sustainability behaviour change advisor. This gave me, above all else, exposure to visionary and purpose-led leaders and dogged determination to leave a position legacy for generations to come.
